Brewer’s notes: How Lucky (kellerbier)

Gotahold Brewing Eureka Springs

How Lucky is the second Kellerbier we’ve released. For those who are unfamiliar with the style, Kellerbiers are a type of Bavarian lager that is not filtered or otherwise clarified, so that the beer retains both the appearance and the flavor it would have in the lagering tanks in the Keller (or beer cellar). Most German Lagers are filtered, yielding a brilliantly clear beer that looks beautiful in a glass, but that filtration also removes some of the flavor of the beer. Kellerbiers, while traditionally not as pleasing to the eye, have a more intense flavor profile and tend to have a roundness of character that filtered lagers can’t match. The malt profile meshes more seamlessly into the hop aromas and flavors, and the beers additionally can have a nice smooth mouthfeel.

How Lucky, which we named for a John Prine song, is how we’re feeling right now: having gotten through a full pandemic year and a tough stretch of winter weather, spring is finally here with flowers and trees starting to bloom and great beer garden weather.
